ABSTRACT

BioShock is a first person shooter game where The player takes the role of Jack; after his plane crashes underwater in the Atlantic ocean leading to the underwater city of Rapture. Jack is guided by radio communications through the city of Rapture towards various objectives. The game has meanings behind such objectives where, based on the moral choices of the player, whom, can either save or kill different characters within the game, and therefore reveals different aspects of the storyline. Furthermore the theme of the game and various concepts of it, is based around the survival horror genre. Based on the information gathered, BioShock game is considered one of the best video games of all time receiving by different media outlets Game of the Year Awards.. It also received “critical acclaim and was particularly praised by critics for its morality-based storyline, immersive environments, its unique setting”.

BioShock

It is very interesting to see that out world in a way is controlled by the gaming world. The article defines the gaming system in this sense BioShock as being an just like the title “Anthropology of Social Behavior”. Kathy Meyers writes “While playing BioShock, we are conducting an anthropological investigation that has a direct effect on how we interact with the narrative and the choices we make”. After reading her points made about the concepts of the game and how it is constructed to the past and present of Anthropological events within the game, it grasps ones attention of understanding how, many people’s behaviors, do alter through the things that they do or play. The game as I have read about this far states that, jack is challenged with moral objectives of decision-making throughout the game. Going through different levels and by the player making such decisions as well as discovering the place he is in, revels the behavior or the individual controlling jack is then revealed. The environments surrounding Jack, according to the article, presents the imagery of the levels of behaviors to the player. It is very interesting to see how games do reveal the behavioral levels for those playing a game. Different people like different types of games, this now makes me want to think about such persons behavioral modes. In this sense BioShack has a very strong sense of engagements towards a persons behaviors for such individual to be playing this game. The authors tell us of how interaction with such complex world within this game can therefore alter the decision made at different stages of the game. If one pays attention to the detailed surroundings of Jack and use their anthropology knowledge, grasp the meaning of the foreshadowing presence throughout the game. “How we interpret these layers, how we deal with conflicting narratives, and what actions we choose to take are all intimately tied to one another.” For this game to be engaging to the play we have to notice the levels of interactions all throughout the game and therefore understand the behavioral aspect of the gaming world that is game has won awards in. Unfortunately the article does not have any comments but I choose this article because I do agree the points made by the author and how there is a huge Anthology of Social Behavior within BioShock. I am not much of a gamer I love to watch other people play, but having read this artile I would say that throughout the game and the environments of which I would be surrounded in as Jack, I would base my designs of certain situations based on the feeling my get while there. Trusting my gut to make the designs be the best more because I would know that my actions are based on the situation at hand. It is amazing to understand the concept of what we do in a video game can have a meaning in a persons life. Most people are controlled by the world of video games. People are put into categories based on their interests, thus they tend to play a certain type of video games. Moods are sometimes controlled by video games. I saw on the new once that a boy went to the school shoot people and he thought he was in a video game, after reading this article I would have to say that I understand now how much video games can affect an individual.
